A Tudor four poster bed was typically grand and imposing with thick carved pillars measuring anything up to 18 inches in diameter. In Tudor times beds were considered to be the most important item of furniture in the home. This was the case whether it was a rich or poor home.
These grand four poster beds were heavily carved typically with family coats of arms, knights or floral designs. The carving was usually on the back of the bed which was fixed to the wall behind. The bed canopy was supported by the thick pillars which stood away from the front of the bed.
Typically a Tudor four poster bed would be adorned with heavy curtains and drapes made from silk and other luxurious fabrics. The larger and heavier the bed was the higher the status of its owner was considered to be.
Originally all Tudor four poster beds were made from oak or walnut. Over time and under the influence of the French four poster beds became lighter and more elegant and different woods were used such as mahogany.
This four poster bed has been hand crafted with Tudor features including simple heavy detail on the footboard and pillars. There is also carved shell detail on the headboard. Hanging drapes can be added to this bed if required.
