Console Table – Mixing Style with Functionality

6 April 2018

Console Table – A Brief History

The console table is an item of furniture that was first designed in the 18th century and was originally a half-moon shaped slab fixed to the wall with an s-shaped bracket known as a console. Most of the time a mirror was affixed above the small table for the woman of the house to apply makeup or power their faces. Other times they were used as pure decoration and did not usually have items of weight on them due to bracket not being able to withstand heavy objects.

The Modern Console Table

The console table we know and love today is more of a small freestanding table than a wall-fixed bracketed floating “shelf”. They are also more commonly seen in hotels or stately homes. They are seen as both functional and decorative, often having lots of money spent on them and the dressing as they are used as a first impression on the guest as they walk in.

Here are some examples of some of the console tables we have to offer:

Carved Mahogany Console Table

A more traditional design of console table, our Carved Mahogany Console Table. Made from solid mahogany and finished with a traditional wax polish to enhance the natural wood.
