Why choose a Mahogany Bed?

3 April 2017

If you want to buy a mahogany bed Lock Stock and Barrel is the best place! but first we must consider why people should choose such a wood for their bed to be made from…

Why choose Mahogany?

Customers have so much choice these days when buying items of furniture. Once a customer has decided they want wooden furniture they then have to decide what kind of wood is right for them. The most important question is whether the customer will choose between hard and soft wood?

Hardwoods come from broad-leaved trees (trees that drop their leaves every year and produce seeds) whereas softwoods come from conifer tress (trees that have needles and do not produce seeds). Examples of hardwoods include mahogany, walnut, birch and maple. Examples of soft woods include pine, cedar and fir. There are pros and cons of both types of wood; both being commonly used for furniture. Obviously hardwoods are harder wearing and sturdier; making softwoods easier to mark and bend. Most softwoods such as pine are more suited to be painted as they are lighter in colour and easier to be processed. They are inexpensive woods. Hardwoods cost more.

So why would anyone choose furniture made of hardwood if its much more expensive; especially mahogany? Softwoods might work out less expensive in the short term but they are less likely to last for long periods of time because of general wear and tear. For instance it is a lot easier to mark and brake off parts of a pine chest of drawers than a mahogany one. Mahogany features fine even wood grains which makes it ideal to make furniture out of. It generally resists wood rot and is easy to polish. The beautiful rich mahogany colour usually darkens over time and is easy to stain in different tones. Mahogany wood looks luxurious and elegant. It is a very traditional wood which looks perfect in many homes.

Buying a Mahogany Bed Frame from us

We have an extensive range of beds made of solid mahogany wood at Lock Stock and Barrel. As we have discussed mahogany is a very durable and hard wearing wood; this makes it ideal for making beds. We use our beds every day and spend a lot of time in them. It is therefore essential they last a long time. People already have to worry about changing their mattresses every 8 years or so (recommended by experts) so they don’t want the further inconvenience and expense of changing the whole bed. It is therefore essential high quality materials are used.

Our beds come in 3 standard sizes – 4’6 double, 5′ king size and 6′ super king. All of the mahogany beds come with a solid mahogany bed frame and slats to support the mattress. Most come partially assembled for easier transportation and are easy to put together by hand. We offer gorgeous four poster and half tester beds which are real statement pieces. A lot of our beds feature intricate and decorative hand carved detailing. This goes from the subtle to the extravagant. We also have traditional rattan styled head and footboards which offer a gorgeous and fashionable ‘shabby chic’ look. Many of our beds are reproductions of traditional antique bed designs and styles. But we do offer beautiful contemporary examples also.

As all of our beds offer bespoke options we have a mahogany bed suitable for everyone!
