Mahogany Library Steps and Bed Steps

Although our traditional wooden library steps are an antique reproduction they are still useful in this day and age. They are ideal if you have a tall bookcase and can’t quite reach your books on the top shelf or for reaching tall kitchen cupboards.

We have a small selection of mahogany steps. They are all made of solid mahogany but are available in a number of different finishes.

These antique reproduction library steps are handcrafted from solid mahogany and feature intricate hand carved detail. They are finished with a traditional wax polish which enhances the natural wood. You won’t need to worry about putting them together as they arrive fully assembled.

Mahogany Library Step Chair

Our step chairs are the most versatile step that we sell as they have a dual purpose. They can be used as an occasional extra chair or, when folded out, as a practical step ladder. The step chair is available in a traditional mahogany colour, a natural wax finish or painted in black or white.

The vintage style Step Chair is often referred to as “metamorphic library steps”.

What are metamorphic library steps?

“Metamorphic library steps are a type of archaic dual-use furniture, consisting of a small folding staircase that can be transformed into chair or desk form (such as a small writing table or library table). In desk form, it can also be considered a mechanical desk.

Metamorphic library steps were first built in the mid-18th century for the private libraries and offices of the European nobility or the Bourgeoisie. The number of specialised rooms in the typical manor was increasing, so existing ones, like the library, had to use space more efficiently. Consequently, these rooms often had high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves. The topmost shelves were difficult to reach, so movable library steps or library stairs were created as a form of domestic furniture.”

The “Jerome” mahogany bed step is ideal for some extra assistance getting into large traditional style beds that are on platforms. The bed steps could also be used for displaying decorative items.
