Mahogany Coffee Table or Walnut Coffee Table – Which to Choose?

Before deciding which mahogany coffee table or walnut coffee table to purchase there are a few points to consider:

What size is best?

It is important to consider the size of the coffee table and whether it will fit the proportions of your room. In a small room don’t go for something too large that will overpower the space. In a large room a small coffee table will get lost.

The height of a coffee table is also an important factor to consider. Ideally the table should be the same height as the cushions on your sofa or just 2 – 5 cm lower. Too high and it will look out of proportion and too low it wont be at a comfortable height to use. With regard to length the table should be approximately two thirds the length of your sofa.

Remember to allow enough space between the coffee table and your sofa or chairs. Ideally there should be at least 60cm between the table and your seating.

Tip! – try marking out the size of the coffee table on the floor with tape. You should then be able to see if the size works in your room.

Which shape is best?

Rectangle – a rectangular shaped table works best with a long sofa remembering that ideally it should be two thirds the length of your sofa.

Square – a square coffee table works well with a small sofa.

Round – a round table is good for a smaller room allowing more space to move around the table.

Trunk – a trunk style coffee table is perfect for storage.  If you like watching films, reading books or playing games this style of coffee table is perfect.

Which style to choose?

This really is down to your preference and the style of your property. Contemporary styles such as the New York and Orchard coffee tables have clean straight lines and suit most properties whether modern or period. The more traditional tables like the Pillar mahogany coffee table and 6 drawer round table perhaps are more suitable for a period property.

Is wood a good choice?

Tip! – always use a coaster under hot drinks or damp glasses. You don’t want to ruin your new coffee table!
