Sleigh Beds – A brief History

Sleigh beds have been around since the early 19th century and is a mix of French and American design. The first of these were originally made for single person use and were often found in alcoves, it wasn’t until the early 1800s that we saw the first Emperor Sleigh Beds become available.

With a hideaway second bed, or trundle, which pulls out on castors making it ideal for a guest room that is also used as an office. Our sleigh trundle bed

Traditionally these beds were made from a hardwood such as Mahogany and indeed many still are to this day (including our own Mahogany Sleigh Beds), however later on in history other woods have been sourced due to their attractive appearance such as cherry; pine; oak and to this day walnut (Walnut Sleigh Beds are something else we provide!).

One of our bestselling beds is this Mahogany Sleigh Bed with Low footboard. Traditionally sleigh beds have large sweeping head and footboards but this bed has been popular due to its much lower profile. Giving luxury and extra space for the taller person.
